Endorsements

Sierra Club

For the second time in my life, I have been privileged to receive the endorsement of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Sierra Club and with the recommendation of the Moshannon Group that covers Centre County and 10 other counties. I am very proud of this endorsement from an organization that I greatly admire. Some of what I told them when I applied for the endorsement is below.

I have been a proud member of the Sierra Club for many years and, as a citizen of this planet, I have proudly embraced their pro-environmental and pro-climate values. With Penn Environment, I have lobbied our legislators on environmental bills before the Pennsylvania Legislature. I have participated with the Sierra Club in several environmental protests in State College and in Washington, DC.

When I was on State College Borough Council, I was a strong environmental and climate activist. I spearheaded the Council’s signing on to Sierra Club’s 100% Renewable Initiative a few years ago. I have been a strong advocate for the Solar Power Purchase Agreement, both in print with a CDT Op-Ed co-authored with School Board member Peter Buck, as a member of State College Borough Council, and as a private citizen.

The Solar Power Purchase Agreement will give the district 80% of its power. I want us to get the other 20% from Pennsylvania’s Solar for Schools program.

The SCASD board has a strong record in its environmental practices. The high school built a few years ago is LEED Gold and the three newest elementary school buildings are LEED Platinum. The planned replacement for Park Forest Middle School is expected to be at least LEED Silver and will be planned to be LEED Gold. The district plans to install solar panels and working toward a net zero building. I enthusiastically support these efforts.

In the next four years, I  promise to be a pro-environment, pro-climate State College Area School District Director. It is consistent with our educational mission and our role in the State College Area community.

People in the Community

Ezra Nanes

Mayor of State College

I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Jesse Barlow during his tenure as State College Borough Council President while I served as Mayor, and I’ve seen firsthand his unwavering integrity and commitment to public service. Jesse is a principled leader who stands courageously for what he believes, always mindful of the responsibility that comes with the public’s trust. I have no doubt that he will work tirelessly to foster an inclusive culture, advocate for all students and families, and ensure SCASD has the resources and policies needed to support its entire community.
